Full auto chooses its moves by type: the strongest move that hits, never one without effect, and ranged moves at range (Water Gun, Ember …).
Full auto keeps PP: among equally strong moves it uses the one with more PP, and it saves the last PP of a move for foes it is super effective against.
Auto mode can be switched on with foes in view (also right after the stairs) and no longer switches itself off without a reason.
